Northern Delight (Sg Petani- Kedah)

Tan Kee Roasted Duck
It is a challenge to find good roasted duck that comes at a reasonable price. Since young, I have frequented this stall and thankfully, the taste remains the same- or better- as I aged, I appreciate food more! The stall only sells roasted duck. You can devour its succulent meat served either with rice or porridge. When the plate is served, I dive to the meaty part first, peeling its skin away only to be eaten later, and tear its meat to go with my spoonful of rice. The meat tastes good, but even better if you dip or pour the sauce over the duck. Ask for more sauce if necessary- it goes well with the rice and porridge too. The sauce adds a sweet and salty flavour to the meal.

If you are not really a fan of duck, or has a family member who came along that doesn't take duck meat, worry not! This food court offers a variety of other choices you might consider trying. One option is the Wan Tan Mee stall. As for drinks, you may want to cool yourself down with a chilled bowl of Leng Chi Kang for RM 2.40.

Fried Kuay Teow
The locals will know this stall very well. When I first came here, it was their mother who cooked. Now, it has been passed down to her son, while she sees from the side and supervise. Although hands have changed, this famously known Char Kuay Teow still has that oomph that makes me come back for more. It has a distinctive taste, nothing like those you find in other places around Malaysia, food courts or restaurants. The style of cooking itself is amusing. With proper measurements of the various sauces, control of fire and wok skills, the stall welcomes in-house customers at the shop and customers that made a queue for take-away.

My trip to Sungai Petani will never be complete without a stop here.

Aside from the Fried Kuay Teow, there are other stalls outside- much like a hawker center. Some recommendations of mine are the Dry Fish Ball Noodles, Wan Tan Mee, Lobak and to quench your thirst, visit the stall somewhere in the middle that sells white sugar cane 'air tebu', chrysanthemum tea 'teh bunga' and herbal tea.

Good Luck Restaurant

Whether it is for lunch or dinner, this restaurant should be on your list among those of 'must visits' in Sungai Petani. The Good Luck Restaurant offers one of the best Bak Kut Teh, served bubbling hot from the stove to your table. No doubt, this restaurant has been popular among locals and ever since I visited this place, I have never regretted falling victim to its irresistible soup. The ladies of the shop are friendly and fun to talk to, probably after knowing them for many years. My claypot of bak kut teh always reaches the bottom, and try to ask for extra soup if you want because I always have it!

Worry not if pork is not to your choice of meat at this restaurant because apart from the bak kut teh, you can order their side dishes that live to its expectations and work to be an ideal combination with the bak kut teh. The mixture of tofu and fish fillet in black sauce, in the picture above, is one of my many recommendations. The stir fried cabbage and curry fish head are popular choices among the customers. With these and a bowl of white rice, I can safely say your meal is complete and satisfying.
