Jet Mei Seafood Restaurant, Ijok, Selangor

Getting onto the LATAR highway, from the North-South Highway (PLUS) or from Rawang, the quaint town of Ijok is relatively easy to fine. Exit after the Ijok Toll and drive along the main road. It was my first time in Ijok- the previous was not counted as i only went through to get to Kuala Selangor. Surrounded by many oil palm plantations and kampung style houses, the laid-back look of Ijok boasts great eat, especially the Beggar's Chicken. However, as we asked for directions from a friendly couple, who was buying some snacks by the roadside, we were told that without reservation, it is usually sold out. Instead, we asked for their kind recommendation and kindly enough, they led us, with their motorcycle, to another restaurant popular among the locals and possibly tourists. This affirms that we have friendly and helpful people around us!

This seafood restaurant does not sit by the seaside or is designed with lavish decor, but it is air-conditioned, decent enough to welcome our hungry stomach. Not knowing what to order, the waitress recommended several of their popular dishes. Service was quick as there was no crowd at that time.

 Entrance.

Pork Belly with Yam for RM 12. Not as much gravy as i thought, this claimed popular dish was slightly disappointing. The meat is tender and the yam is tasty but neither proved to leave a lasting memory or have the oomph.

Served wrapped up on a hot plate is...

The 3 Mixed Seafood (RM 16): prawns, squid and lala, cooked in what tasted like kam heong style. The moment i unwrapped the foil, the aroma of spices seeped through and rose, elevating my appetite. My mom was not too fond of the sauce, but i enjoyed this dish. Similarly, i expected more sauce to mix with my rice.

Soft in the inside, crunchy on the outside. Not a fan of brinjal eggplant, this Fried Eggplant is a winner. The minimal sauce, in contrast to the other two dishes, is sufficient. Reasonably priced at RM 6, this could be eaten as a finger food or simply over tea time. Highly recommended.

Stingray Assam at RM 12 was delectable. The sweet and sourish taste of the gravy, with the fish cooked well, made for good lunch. It does not have many other ingredients on the plate like vegetables but i assume it is to make the fish shine. Less makes for more.

My first experience in Ijok proved to be a satisfying one. This review says it, and more is to try in this town.
