Alor Akar Seafood Restaurant, Kuantan, Pahang

Walking into the crowded restaurant on a Saturday night, i saw that many tables had not eaten- and i was hungry. This restaurant is one of the popular restaurants in Kuantan; simple looking but busy with people moving around almost constantly. We were seated then quick to be asked for drinks- we wanted sugar cane but it was sold out by then, so we settled for the thirst quenching and sweet wheatgrass. There were boards on the wall with photographs of their signature dishes- we used them as reference and also looked out for what other customers ordered. Dinner was served not long after- table by table until it was our turn.

Beggar Chicken. Wrapped in foil, the chicken was cooked until soft and the meat could easily detach from the bones. The strength of this dish, however, was the herbal gravy- or soup, in it. It was aromatic with strong herbs flavour and it surely felt nutritious. No wonder why this dish's photograph was on the board.

Taufu with Salted Fish. At first bite, it was good. But after awhile, the taste (of salted fish) became too overwhelming for my liking. Having said that, mixing it with rice helped balanced the saltiness. The taufu was okay.

I was disappointed with this dish: Butter Mantis Prawn. I saw many customers ordered this but when i walked out, i saw many did not finish it (prawns and mantis prawn). The butter topping lacked flavour- if only it was tasty, the butter topping would be gone by the end of dinner. The mantis prawn became dull.

Nyonya Steamed Fish was tasty. Fish was fresh but undercooked the first time. We informed the waitress and she brought it back to the kitchen to be steamed again. The spiciness combined with the sweet and sour flavour from the pineapple made the gravy appetizing.

Pork in Yam Basket. The yam was amazing! If there is anything i'd order again, it's the yam. Soft but not too soft, crispy outer layer and well flavoured. Unfortunately, the pork did not match its counterpart. Slightly hard although well marinated. May be you can try this with the mix vegetable filling.

Mixed Four Vegetables. I did not taste this much because i don't take these vegetables. However, my sister rated this as her favourite dish at dinner. I tasted the sauce and it was delicious.

Some hits, some misses. A popular restaurant? Perhaps, looking at the crowd and the price (dinner was reasonable). My favourite? Not really, but i left the restaurant with a full and happy stomach. The next time i visit this restaurant, however, i will try a different menu.
