F4 Fish Head Restaurant, Subang Jaya, Selangor

Image
When i think of hidden gems, i will surely think of this from now on. Situated in an industrial area in Subang Jaya, my family and i headed to this restaurant for dinner. Following Waze, the road leading in was dark and quiet. Then, there would be cars lining the sides of the road, amid the warehouse-sized buildings. The restaurant was huge too. There were many fans so it was well-ventilated. Despite it being hidden, it was crowded during my time of visit. We found a table and quickly placed order with a friendly waitress. It was not too long that our dishes arrived. This bowl of fish head curry was packed with flavour. Delicious! I thoroughly enjoyed the curry-wet rice and fresh fish. The spiciness level was acceptable and appetizing. This taufu in pumpkin sauce was another winning dish. The sweetness of the pumpkin was not overpowering. A delightful combination with the curry fish. The tofu was smooth but not delicate so it was easy to eat. Served in a mini claypot, ...

My Miri Journey: Get Out

Image
Blessed to have the long weekend during the Raya celebration, i grabbed this opportunity for a getaway. I contemplated between the exploration of Mulu or the adventures in Miri, and as the title has given away, i chose the latter. Mulu felt rather rushy and i thought better to keep that for another time. I have been to Miri two years ago and wrote in My Miri Journey: Makai in Miri (Note: some places may have changed) about my gastronomic experience. This time, while food still has a place in my heart, was more about the outdoor adventures. Familiar? I arrived at the airport late at night, immediately welcoming the air of nostalgia as i descended the propeller plane. My friend, who thoughtfully crafted this itinerary for my travel, was already waiting for my arrival. We began the next day with a visit around the Seahorse Lighthouse . In my previous visit, this lighthouse was closed off due to construction work. Now, i got to see it up-close. It was cloudy but breezy. There wa...

Restoran Chen Fatt, Seri Kembangan, Selangor

Image
It has been awhile since we returned to Seri Kembangan. As we were around the area, we decided to head to a restaurant we tried before, and i remembered liking it. My memory of the place was faded and i recalled the road the restaurant is facing at was narrower. It wasn't easy to get a parking spot by the main road on a busy afternoon.  Air-conditioned upstairs, fan on ground level. We sat under the fan and placed our orders, from our past experience and recommendations. The chrysanthemum tea i ordered was slightly bitter (less sugar) but it was fine with me as it was refreshing for a hot day. Tau Fu Kan 'Beancurd Soup' was yummy. I liked that the tau fu was tiny and not dissolved in the soup. The flavours and saltiness were well balanced. Add a dash of vinegar to elevate the taste. Yam Basket with Sweet and Sour Pork came pretty. However, i strongly advise against this combination as, while i like sweet and sour pork, this doesn't match. The sourish ...

Kedai Makanan Sinki, Dengkil, Selangor

Image
It's been awhile since i last updated this blog and it was because i was busy at work and wasn't in the country. So now that i'm back for some days off, the adventure bug bit, and my family and i found ourselves enjoying lunch at Dengkil- a random detour from Putrajaya.   Walking towards the eatery. I was not familiar with Dengkil but i was told that there are Chinese restaurants in the area. About half an hour from KL via MEX highway, Dengkil is a simple town with an old charm. Cruising down the road, i cannot but feel nostalgic- memories of other little towns that i passed through on my way to my university, and day trips with family and friends came to mind. Perhaps, being in the working life was the trigger. Sandwiched between shops lies this popular restaurant. I Googled and this restaurant appeared on the first page. We decided to give this a try. My dad seemed to recall being at this restaurant many, many years back and he mentioned that the food here i...

Fei Fei Crab Restaurant, Kepong, KL

Image
My family suddenly craved for crabs and we didn't know where to get delicious ones at a reasonable price. Then, my mum Googled and discovered this crab restaurant in Kepong. Concerns: it is about 30 minutes from where we live, worth it or not, and more importantly, if it will satisfy the craving. But we had to take the chances. After all, reviews from other blogs seemed favourable. So we set the location in Waze and off we went. We found this restaurant tucked between two other restaurants, bustling with customers when we arrived. The restaurant was plain looking with yellow-clothed tables and red chairs, with air conditioning inside and open air outside. We got a table at the entrance and quick to be shown their eye-catchy menu and dish names. I would appreciate it more if they included the prices of the food; not all prices were written. Service was friendly and fast; dinner was served and i was ready to dig in. Two Flavours Snail was delightful! Served on a yin-yang sh...

Glitter Palace Seafood Restaurant, Bandar Mahkota Cheras, Selangor

Image
After a photography session near Viva Home in the morning, my family and i headed to Bandar Mahkota Cheras for lunch. My dad recommended this restaurant as he has been before. Located in a relatively new shoplot scheme, this restaurant looks glamorous on the outside. The section where the entrance is was plain looking but when we moved to the other side, draped with curtains that were drawn when the crowd came in, was more exquisite. We rearranged the 12-person table to fit the eight of us, sat and ordered. Service was fine and lunch was quick to be served. Marmite Chicken was deliciously tender. The gravy wasn't too thick so the flavours wasn't overpowering. Even the skin remained crispy. My grandpa loves marmite chicken and i'm pretty sure he enjoyed this. Guinness Stout 'Pai Kuat' Pork Ribs was delectable. The meat was well marinated, easy to bite and easy to chew. Slightly sweet but good to eat with rice. Although both these dishes are visually simila...

Restaurant Triple Round, Bukit Beruntung, Selangor

Image
We drove more than 45 minutes from KL to Bukit Beruntung for dinner. My family has been to the restaurant but it was my first. From the highway, we moved to dark, low-lit roads and arrived at the restaurant. The crowd at the restaurant was massive- tables were occupied, there were tour buses, customers queuing up outside, and the atmosphere was rather chaotic- plates of rice and dishes flying in the air, waiters and waitresses constantly moving, chatters from neighbouring tables. It was a Sunday night so i suppose this scenario was no surprise to a restaurant that serves good food- my brother told me that he would have two plates of rice even when we were in KL. We found a little table at the edge of the restaurant, sat and waited for our turn to place orders. It wasn't long until our food was served. Signature taufu with minced pork (RM 8). The sauce and minced pork were tasty. Taufu was ordinary. Overall, slightly above average but good starter. Came steaming hot to ou...

Restoran Kam Kitchen, Cheras, KL

Image
My mom actually Google-d for recommended restaurants nearby and she discovered this place in Cheras. We decided to try, putting our adventure caps on. The eatery sits slightly off the main road but despite it being somewhat hidden, it was crowded with people that we had to sit outside, without the air-conditioning (my mom called earlier and the recipient told her it was not necessary to book. Lesson learned: just book). We were then entertained by the waiter who we later knew is the brother of the chef. He possessed good public relation skill, recommending and taking our orders down cheerfully. Not long after, we moved inside- and breathed the cool air. The interior was plain but sufficient in design. Out came this Pumpkin Beancurd 'Taufu' (RM 12). It was special, especially with the unique pairing of these two ingredients, and it felt healthy. The 'taufu' was ok and the pumpkin sauce could make do with a little more flavour. Generally, this dish tasted light. Or...
