My Elephant, Petaling Jaya, Selangor

Guess what this restaurant serves? Smile if you say Thai food (or smile if now you know). Thai cuisine is popular among my family members (we enjoy almost all other cuisines we have tried) and many other Malaysians. You may find at least a shop in food court in complexes or food centers, if not a stand alone restaurant, that sells Thai food. And when Thai food is mentioned, tom yam comes to mind almost instantly. I discovered this cozy eatery from my family. The restaurant is located in a residential-flat neighbourhood, which surprised me at my very first visit. But as i stepped through the entrance, i was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was neat and the decor was pretty. And the crowd was large- making reservation on peak periods is recommended. As Tom Yam would be my most anticipated dish then, i walked out from the restaurant wanting more of the Green Curry Chicken instead. Now, i crave for it one more time- it is THAT delicious! Simply mouth-watering! The gravy is t...

Outback Steakhouse KL

My visit to this restaurant was a pleasant one. I enjoyed the ambiance and the food. The steakhouse has that ranch-feel, emphasizing on its outback name. The table we sat at was high- or the chair was low, but the atmosphere and the lighting was nicely set for a nice dinner. Inside is air-conditioned but there is live music to listen to if you sit outside in the later part of the evening. It was partly a Groupon promotion that had driven me to try. The deal was pretty good- i saved almost 50 percent (Groupon offers for Alice Spring Chicken and soup of the day, or Seafood Pasta and Kookaburra Wings. The rest are as per the menu). Without the discounts, i would have to dig deeper into my pockets. The Typhoon Bloom is an amazing appetizer. The onion strings, which spiraled around a spicy dipping sauce, is aromatic and flavourful. Peeling the onions from the 'tornado' and putting them in my mouth surely blew me away, as the menu suggests. Enough to share for a family...

Tanjung Sepat, Selangor

Slightly more than an hour and a half drive from KL, through the country side- the kampung and stretch after stretch of oil palm estates, sits a quietly hidden charm for a city getaway. Despite the journey, i was fascinated by the view of my surrounding along the way. The old, rustic brick houses meet the wooden homes of the people. Small and narrow roads. Gardens of dragon fruits. Brick factories. Passed by the racing circuit of Sepang and drove through a peculiar town known as Sungai Pelek, literally translated as 'Weird River'; from the greens, we cruised along a short coast line, still high tide and the bottom of the mangrove trees submerged in sea water. As we moved into the heart of Tanjung Sepat, our car stood at a momentary standstill: traffic. Holidays spell crowd, but sometimes, i prefer to visit such places when there are tourists. Breakfast, Hai Yew Heng Pau Everything was within walking distance for our first part of this eating 'makan' adventure. We p...
