My Cambodian Journey: The Next Stop

The end of this story. But not the last.

After almost 6 days of traveling, visiting the Genocide Museum, the Killing Fields, Silver Pagoda, the Angkor Wat and the Tonle Sap Lake, we took this day to tone down, sit back, relax and enjoy. It was our last day because our flight back was early morning the next day. We returned to the Pub Street area- this place comes to life at night, and in the daylight, it was like any other ordinary streets with many bars.

Breakfast at Old Market
I bought a packet of Amok spice- i do not want to regret like last time when i didn't buy the Sarawak Laksa back home. It felt like the market in Phnom Penh- food at the almost center, clothes, souvenir and other stalls surrounding the food area. Getting to the food area was not easy too. For breakfast, i had the Rice with Pork because i liked the sweet caramelization of the pork. It was not as good as the first time i tried in Phnom Penh. Then, i had their local 'kuih seri muka'. We walked around, making sure we had bought enough souvenir back.

Pork Rice!

Green local 'kuih seri muka'.

 In the busy Old Market.

The Blue Pumpkin, Pub Street
Recommended by my friend, we decided to chill in this eatery. The upper floor had cushioned sofa but they were all occupied. So we sat near to the window and ordered. Famous for their ice cream, this eatery also served other dishes and supports a cause. It was hot outside, so we had only ice cream. There were several outlets of The Blue Pumpkin and even at our hostel, we found the ice creams on sale.

My cool Moonlight (USD 3.75). The vanilla was good but i didn't like the caramel flavour.

Lunch at Old Market
We returned for lunch at the Old Market. We had the Fried Noodles 'loh-shi-fan-look-a-like'. Also, it was not as good as the one i had at night. Then we went back to our hostel and rested.

Lady in action preparing the noodles.

I'm not taking this again.

Touich Restaurant
If you're going to Siem Reap, make a date with this restaurant. Make reservations. It is worth going. It is located slightly away from town so a 'tuk tuk' would be good. They provide pick-ups but on a limited, first come first serve basis. If you're early in booking a table, ask them for the pick up service too. It was a house; I saw the signboard of the restaurant then i thought differently, until i went to the main entrance, i was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere. The restaurant has character and i couldn't wait for dinner. Nicknamed 'the wife', this is a family business. The waiters and waitress are related and they were friendly.

One of the pages of the menu. Very well priced.

My Khmer Rib Eye Fillet with Kampot Peppers. Oh, it was so, so good. The plate presentation was nice. The fillet was succulent and flavourful. It was a large portion; instead of serving with potatoes, this dish is served with rice. I had this fillet made medium and it came perfect.

My friend's Pork Rib on Glowing Embers. It was equally delicious! The portion was large too.

They say 'save the best for last'. This was the best dinner i had in this journey. Great price, great food, great atmosphere.

See more from Touich's website.

Art Center Night Market
Similar to the other night markets, this night market focuses on arts (i believe so) because i watched a short, simple Apsara performance. It is further down the main road.

At least a performance watched.

We retired at our hostel then packed to go back. Our flight back to KL was delayed but we returned safely. My Cambodian journey has been nothing short of adventure; writing memories then and rewriting moments now. Both the cities have their charms and to compare them is incomparable. But in general, Cambodia has much to offer, much to explore, and though i've visited the two cities, there are other parts that i have yet to experience. I am grateful to have visited these two cities and especially the Angkor Wat. I am to start putting UNESCO sites on my traveling map, for the next stop; i'm going to start saving money. This story may have ended, but it is hopefully not the last.
