My Penang Journey: Pearl It Is

Image
Playing with art If the other post of my journey in Penang (Penang here refers to the Penang Island) made your mouth water, this post will not. Penang is also known as the Pearl of the Orient in Malaysia. We entered the island using the old bridge and left with the newly opened one. It was really hot while we were in Penang; nevertheless, it did not deter us from walking under the sun. Needless to say, an umbrella or cap, a bottle of water and good walking shoes would be nice. With George Town listed as a UNESCO site, i was eager to dive in and immerse myself in the heritage-rich, a melting pot of culture, township. Pulau Tikus is a name to be familiar with while on the island- i actually thought we were going to another island ('Pulau' is Malay for island), or the island is occupied by rats ('Tikus' is Malay for rat). Upon further reading, well, it got its name from a rocky outcrop 2 km off the northern coast of Penang Island, just opposite Tanjung Tokong th

My Penang Journey: A Foodie's Confession

I never thought i would like Penang food, until i went on this short, gastronomic journey on the island. It is no wonder as to why it is recognized as a food haven (even to Malaysians)- you can find delicious meals or snacks at any hour, at any corner. There was a wide selection of food to choose from here. Recommended. Here it is. A state famous for its Char Kuay Teow, this plate of noodles (from the shop next to Gent

Did the title capture your attention? Part of this post is dedicated to sharing of my experience on the rig. It was my first time to a jack up rig (or any rig) and seeing the tools and equipment on board, in real, was an ambition of mine after graduation. When i saw images or videos of roughnecks working on the rig floor during my university days, i wondered if i would work as such (i didn't wish to because i'm not a big guy and the job looked rough). Well, that realized too, and i saw myself working through as a Roustabout (performing general labour), Floorman (a better name than Roughneck) and Derrickman (i enjoyed being the Derrickman the most). While i did work with tongs- it required some skills to latch them onto drill pipes, i befriended the iron roughneck. With just a press of the button or a twist of the knob, i watched the machine rolled to position and the drill pipes make up or break out. Almost everything on the rig weighs multiples of my own weight, so lifting
