Homemade: Steamed Japanese To-fu

One of the simplest dishes to make at home is to-fu. If you visit the market or the supermarket, you will stumble across the variety of to-fus available. This post focuses on the Japanese to-fu- the one that comes in a rod-like cylinder shape. Of course, there are many ways to prepare the Japanese to-fu, so the highlight here is to steam it.

My mother first attempted to cook this dish to make dinner more interesting. Usually, the Japanese to-fu is prepared stir-fried, with sauce and egg, in my family. On the table, the new recipe tastes good- and ultimately became one of my favourites and easiest dish to prepare.

The ingredients you need are the Japanese to-fu, onion, minced pork, oyster sauce, salt, oil and chopped vegetables (optional for garnishing).

Part of the ingredients: to-fu, minced pork, onion and oyster sauce.

Steps:
The first thing to do is to rinse the Japanese to-fu and then slice them cross-sectional into circles, and chop the onions (as above). Next, sprinkle a little salt and pour some oyster sauce over the to-fu. Start steaming the to-fu in the steamer. Then, on another wok or frying pan, heat oil and later toss the onions in to fry. When the onions change colour, place the minced pork and stir-fry them altogether. This will make part of the sauce.

Place the stir-fried onions and pork over the to-fu and allow it in the steamer for a while. This need not be long as the meat and to-fu are cooked already. Serve when hot for greater taste. This dish makes up about 20 minutes.

You can try substituting the minced pork with chicken (but i have yet to try).

Now you know its simplicity, try your hands on making it. Cooking at home can be fun!
