Levain Boulangerie & Patisserie, Kuala Lumpur

When my friends told me about this place, i knew where it was, but i didn't know where it really, really was. I know i make no sense here but what i mean is, i frequent Jalan Imbi, yet, i didn't know the existence of this cottage-like, colonial-style place that serves wide range of savouries: bread, cookies, macaroons, chocolates, and cakes, and fancy drinks too! Seeing the building from afar exudes charm, as if i was entering an old English lot. That unique ambiance with its classic interior paired to its well priced menu explained the ocean of people inside and wave after wave of new customers hitting the shores of the counter beneath the noon Sun.

Bidding welcome at the entrance.

Parking was tight outside the eatery so the jockey service is reasonably recommended (RM 2) when dining here. One interesting point, as seen from the outside, written boastfully on its brick wall is their unique mode of baking- stone oven. Stone oven is said to ensure even heat circulation and retention, thus resulting in softer breads and pastries. Having tasted them, i had no disagreements. Another interesting point here, slightly different from a regular eatery, is the mode of ordering meals. Self-service, we first had to visit the bakery section to choose the breads, then pay them over the counter and, at the same time, place the orders for dishes from the kitchen and tell them your table number. Service was quick and ours came shortly after. We were lucky to have fresh-from-the-oven pizzas then. Otherwise, we can request our chosen breads to be reheated over the stone oven. Worry not your table, just put the 'Occupied' sign and the people will know it is already taken when you're away ordering. Plain water is free, and free-flow.

Competitive advantage written in large: Stone Oven.

Freshly made Walnut Bread; the worker slicing the Marble Loaf Bread next to it.

The array of choices. We had the Octopus Bread, which was creative and playful but tastes average (bun as its head and sausage cut length-wise to appear like tentacles), popular Turkey, Ham and Cheese (highly recommended), Walnut Bread (recommended), Long Sausage and pizza. We were waiting for the Chocolate Crunch but even when we left, there was none out the oven.

Our dubbed Macaroon Tower as the centerpiece, the skyscraper among the breads and pastries.

For first timers like me, this comes in handy.

For lunch, we shared our main course so we could have a taste of variety. The Creamy Mushroom Soup is truly delectable! Creamy as its name suggests, you will not be disappointed. As playful as some of its breads are, we dipped our share of Long Sausages into this satisfying bowl of soup.We also had the Chicken Lasagne. Tasty and flavours were not overpowering. However, i would prefer if my pasta was harder. Then, we had the Aglio Olio, which was commendable and not too spicy- last point an important personal criteria. The Chicken Meatball Spaghetti Bolognaise's meatballs are a triumph, the star of the dish- making the sauce ordinary at best. Needless to say, we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and i will return for more on the kitchen menu.

The eatery is a nice place to have reunions, gatherings or just to hangout amongst family and friends. We chatted long then excused ourselves downstairs (we sat one floor up as the ground floor and outside were fully occupied) for desserts. Since the yogurt ball was sold out (we were eyeing that since before lunch), we settled for the Rongue and Chocolate Truffles cake, one sweet-sour and the other bittersweet.

If the people doesn't drown you, the choices on the menu will. I was thoroughly impressed with the wide selection of food here- and am especially liking the stone oven concept with the good results, and with the prices well-priced, i wished to try each and every one of them. Of course, my stomach can't take in all at once, so coming back is no surprise!
