Kedai Kopi Shin Lok, Jeram, Selangor

On the road for another food hunt. This time to the uncharted regions of Jeram.

My dad heard of this place from his friends, who then became excited and wanted to try them himself. Waking up considerably early for a Saturday, we quickly got changed and hit the road. At first, we thought it was somewhere in Ijok but after asking the locals, Jeram was the other way. I couldn't turn on the GPS (technical and human errors, my bad) so i had to rely on my navigation skill using Google Maps and some blogs for the address. We found ourselves onto Jalan Kapar and i was on the look-out for a mosque: Al-Naim Mosque. Knowing we were reaching our destination, i grew hungrier and the popular, reason-we-drove-here, 'wu kok' better be good.

Parked slightly at the back, we first saw the kitchen the dishes were prepared in and walked towards the crowded kopitiam for breakfast. Along the way to our table, i glimpsed over the other tables to find them eating 'pau's, yam puff 'wu kok's, and a plate of noodles.

Packing 'pau's for the orders and frying the 'wu kok's in the kitchen.

More 'pau's!

At the back of my mind, my favourite 'wu kok' is the one sold in Bidor and it would be an uphill battle for this shop's to win over that. When it arrived on our table, i looked at it. Innocent, gentle and not greasy. I grabbed one and took my first bite. It was delicious! The skin was crispy and delicate; the yam inside was well textured. The filling was small but surely it did not compromise the taste. It was flavourful. Ours came hot from the kitchen and i can say, eat this best when it is hot (we packed some and it lost some of its great taste when it was cooled). Well worth the journey.

'Wu kok' next to the Vegetable 'pau'. Hearty breakfast. This picture does not do justice to the taste.

Then came the Vegetable 'pau', i reckon it is one of their bestsellers. Again, a comparison popped up, a challenge to the 'pau' in Tanjung Sepat. This 'pau' scored with silky smooth skin and it was fluffy inside. It took several bites before i could taste the filling, the vegetable, and like the 'wu kok', the small filling was tasty.

A cuppa coffee to complete my meal. They make their own coffee and it was good- i'm not a coffee lover but i had this.

We also tried their limited yam-vegetable kuih, which was truly special and equally delicious, and peanut 'pau'- because i'd never tried it elsewhere before. The peanut 'pau' was okay. My only complain about the 'pau' (or 'pau's) here is to have more filling.

Losing to temptations, we ordered one plate of the Mixed Cantonese-style noodles to share. The noodles were crispy. The gravy was a tad too salty for my liking. If 'pau' or 'wu kok' is not your meal, this kopitiam offers other dishes like this plate of noodles, chicken chop rice or economy rice 'chap fan'.

Some price listing of the 'pau's and 'wu kok'. Reasonably priced.

The pulls to this shop are definitely their 'wu kok' and 'pau's. I saw boxes and boxes of takeaways, trays and trays of uncooked 'wo kok' dipped into a hot wok of oil, and steamers after steamers of various 'pau's being brought out from the kitchen to the counter for purchase. This kopitiam in a somewhat quiet town may have been a well kept secret that i am more than happy to discover . I'll say it again: well worth the journey! And a great food hunt.
