Jeti Seafood Restaurant, Kuala Selangor, Selangor
One of the reasons people flock to Kuala Selangor is to buy fresh seafood- fish, prawns, crabs, squids. My reason was another: to eat seafood.
The last time i went to Kuala Selangor was for a school trip that began at Fort Melawati and ended with a sampan ride through the river, watching fireflies at Kampung Kuantan. Since my goal of the day was entirely different, this seafood restaurant is not too hard to find. I can say likewise for every other seafood restaurants here. From the market, you can find lots of seafood restaurants nearby. It was my first time at Jeti Seafood Restaurant.
I enjoyed the setting of the restaurant. The place was airy and breezy, overlooks the river and mangrove forest, and from my table, i could see the bridge people use as landmark. We were there early, before noon, so it was rather unoccupied.
Clockwise from top, left; we had 'to fu kan', fried omelet with oyster and stir-fried spring onion fish fillet. The 'to fu kan' or soup was rather ordinary. It may be slightly salty so add some vinegar to counter-taste. There was also nothing much to shout about for the pizza-cut omelet oyster although it's a signature dish. Different could be said to the stir-fried spring onion fish fillet. The freshness of the fish combined with the sweet and salty sauce was good.
Fried Mee Suah with Mixed Seafood. This noodle dish was tasty. The prawns and squid rings in this dish also delivered well. There were fried fish fillets but not as good as the above picture (with sauce). A satisfying plate nonetheless.
My favourite dish was this: Steamed 'Har Gu' or Sea Mantis Shrimp. Like eating crabs, the satisfaction of savouring its meat after peeling its head, tail and shell off, was rewarding. It was so fresh it tasted sweet naturally. The sauce only complemented the dish. Although its meat may be small and little, it was worth it. The first i had had egg inside, at the back of its body, which made it hard. The second was just delightful.
Some hits, some misses. I would definitely come back to Kuala Selangor for their freshness in seafood. It's finger-licking good. Since i have tried this restaurant, the next time i'm back, i would want to explore the neighbouring restaurants instead- then do the comparison.
*Note, if you're planning to buy seafood at the market, either come early in the morning when there are more options or later in the afternoon (around 3-5pm) when fishermen return from their catch.
