Ban Lee Bak Kut Teh, KL

Bak Kut Teh is very seldom my choice of breakfast- because it's too heavy. But for some reasons, my family and i always visit this eatery in the morning since i was little. There was a gap between that memory and my recent visit, such that i cannot recall entirely what have changed or how it tasted then. Presently, the shop is brighter, cleaner and bigger, and fits my taste buds alright. When speaking of Bak Kut Teh, Klang comes to mind to many with the best claimed to be there; however, as i have yet to try the Bak Kut Teh that gives Klang the label, fame and glory, there are several Bak Kut Teh shops in KL that proves to be tough contenders to the title. One is this restaurant.

We were there on a Sunday morning. Our car was parked at a car park on the lane behind the restaurant. There were many tables occupied. After placing our orders, we sat, watching the neighbouring tables receiving their hot, steamy claypots of Bak Kut Teh. Our stomachs grew hungrier. Ours came not much later as we made a reservation for one of their specialties earlier. First was the appetizer Bak Kut Teh-style: a bowl of Bak Kut Teh soup for the bowl of 'yau char kuai'. Appetizer was okay.

Hot, steamy claypot of Bak Kut Teh with specially ordered large 'pai kuat' pork ribs came next. My personal preference to this dish was the soup. The ideal blend of Chinese herbs and flavours from the pork was so delicious and aromatic, leaving this claypot empty by the end of our breakfast. It was not too salty nor too thick; the soup was clearly good. As for the meat, it was commendable.

The second claypot of Bak Kut Teh with mixed pork parts, vegetables and mushroom. We ordered the 'fu chok' as extra to our meal. Having tasted the earlier soup, this came second best (we only ordered two). Likewise, it was not too salty; just nice to warm the stomach up for the day. The pork meat i had in this was fatty and tender- a guilty pleasure in disguise. We had Bak Kut Teh accompanied with a bowl of white rice and hot Chinese tea.

Our heavy, hearty breakfast cost about RM 110. In my other visit to this restaurant, we had 'tau fu pok' which was simple but a good complement to our meal (i like 'tau fu pok's), and another type of Bak Kut Teh pork. We didn't have these in this visit to try something different. Now i need not travel so far to Klang for good Bak Kut Teh (until i find one really impressive one there or if i'm out, looking for adventure in Klang).
