Brotzeit Bar and Restaurant, Sunway Pyramid, Selangor

I was scrolling through Groupon then i stumbled upon this bar/restaurant. I've read this eatery in a magazine. It is one of the top, relatively new restaurants to open in Malaysia, with great reviews of its food and concept. With the promotion and my turn to treat, i chose Brotzeit German Bier Bar and Restaurant at Sunway Pyramid as my choice. My family and i were all in, ready for a pork feast!

The second of its kind here in Malaysia (the first opened in Mid Valley Megamall), Brotzeit offers Bavarian cuisine and an array of premium beers. We made a lunch reservation and arrived with the company of many other customers also using their vouchers. Seated inside at the cozy, cushioned and air-conditioned area of the restaurant- with the menu already designed during the purchase of this deal, because it was during the day, i did not feel much of the bar-atmosphere, though the elements were there. Nevertheless, the setting is simple but contemporary; greeting us with its sleek, wooden exterior, enough for it to have character. The waiters were friendly and helpful, and soon, our premium beers arrived.

I am not much of a beer-drinker, just to let you know. But because there were four, interestingly, i had to try all four. The four you see are the Original Munchner Urtyp, Hefe- Weissbier, Dunkel Hefe- Weissbier and Original Munchner Dunkel, each with its own alcohol content level and source of production. The way it was served also made it irresistible, an adjective not usually used with beer. I remember liking the Original Munchner Dunker because it was sweeter. I liked it so much when the beers were displayed on the board, like on a boat, that the waiter had to ask us to remove the glasses from the board because they needed to use it to serve others.

Kartoffelsalat or Potato Salad. I enjoyed the smooth texture and flavours of this dish.

This Sauerkraut or Braised German Cabbage tasted rather peculiar. May be because it was my first time tasting this dish.

Here comes the main platter, the pork feast begins! Served on the platter are Schweinshaxn (1.4kg roasted pork knuckle), Schweinerippchen (1kg pork ribs), Bockwurst (smoked pork sausage), Knoblauchwurst (garlic pork sausage), pork steaks and Bauchspeck Zigeuner Art (Gipsy pork belly). Pronouncing or even writing these names down now is challenging. Can you spot all of them on this platter? Got it all, we began to dive our fork and knife into this meaty plate of meat.

Closer look at the sausages. I preferred the garlic pork sausage. Either way, they both tasted fresh, flavourful and meaty. The pork knuckle, oh, guilty pleasure it was! The skin crispy, the meat succulent and tender, and enough flavour and aroma to whet our appetite. No wonder this restaurant is popular with the pork knuckle- clearly, it was delicious.

Another guilty pleasure at the edge of the board- the ribs! Oh, tearing the flesh from the bone like a carnivore, slowly devouring the meat. Pork ribs can also be finger-licking good. The pork belly strips were alright. The pork steaks? Like pork chops; to my liking. Sauces were provided to dip in it for extra flavour, but i usually like to keep it original and taste it the way it is; unless the sauce is really necessary. Here is not the case. The whole platter was a guilty pleasure, of gluttony, of fatty food. Once in a while.

The designed menu does not include dessert and to end the day with an even bigger tummy, i ordered the White Crispy Chocolate Lava Cake (RM 20), recommended by several blog sites. It was expensive and it did not meet my expectation. Crispy, yes; sweet, yes, with the jam; oozing out like i thought, not really; walnut, good. Flavours, not quite there. Overall, nothing spectacular and i would like to try others instead.

Surely, our visit to this bar/restaurant had burned a hole in my pocket but thankfully, with the Groupon deal, i saved more than half if i were to actually go there without. The deal is well worth it, for up to six persons, and the more important point is that, we got to experience Bavarian cuisine, a cuisine we don't eat everyday. Satisfied? Yes, for the pork platter's pork feast and the beer combination. Will i return? Only to splurge, or another good deal, or if someone else is buying. Happy tummy.
