Restoran Hao Yi Lou, Tapah Perak

We found this restaurant not on purpose. But it was so good, we didn't mind and wouldn't mind to go there on purpose the next time. Initially, we wanted to have lunch at a restaurant we had previously in Kampar but we missed the turning, on a busy Friday afternoon. Then, we decided to return to a shop in Tapah, a shop we didn't go for almost two years, but it was closed. So, my dad told that on the way to Cameron Highlands from Tapah, there is a famous restaurant but he wasn't sure where or its name. We explored, hungry.

Not too far from the turning to Cameron Highlands, we passed by a row of shops and i noticed one restaurant stood out. Uncertain if it was the restaurant my dad was referring to, we decided to give it a try- the crowd pulled us in, somehow, we knew the large number of customers in a restaurant may indicate that food's good. We asked the waitress to recommend some of the popular dishes and she named some. We ordered three dishes and she told us that our lunch would be enough- the portions were big. While waiting for lunch, i explored the aquarium corner of the restaurant and i noticed a terrapin. Yes, the waitress asked if we wanted terrapin but i immediately declined. I was not ready, mentally.

On the wall is a board to help you decide. Or you can just ask the waitress.

When i heard this 'Belacan Paku Choy' (RM 5), i knew to order this. It tasted fresh and lean (not sure if 'lean' is the right word to use to describe the vegetable), as if it was just plucked and fried. The 'belacan' added flavour to this dish, making it delightful to eat.

This 'Stir Fried Fish Fillet' (RM15) is another recommended dish. Nice texture and flavour of the fish fillet. Not much sauce, rather oily, but good oily.

With my brothers around, we don't order frog. Without them at the table, 'Steamed Frog' (RM20) was what we ordered. Delicious, sweet and salty sauce, and the frog meat bouncy and soft. Oh, recalling how this dish tasted makes me salivate!

Reasonably priced, lunch was satisfying. The waitress provided good recommendations. It was a great discovery, this restaurant, that i've bookmarked and can't wait to return for more. We packed 'Stir Fried Eel' back home and it was good too- i wonder how it would taste like having it there.

Outside the restaurant is a fruit stall that allows fruits to be served in. This healthy plate of cut guava and pineapple cost RM 3. When in Tapah, eat the guavas.
