Kedai Makanan Nam Heong, Ipoh, Perak

Image
Ipoh is famous for white coffee. And a visit to Nam Heong kopitiam is a must for coffee-lovers, especially with its claimed Old Town white coffee status. I went there once in the morning for breakfast and it was crowded; and it was no less crowded in my second visit during tea time. The white coffee drink was later sold out at late evening when we decided to order more, leaving me to savour my cup of iced white coffee (RM1.70). The aromatic beverage had just the right sweetness, and it was authenticity at its best. Even toasted bread took awhile for serving due to demands of the crowd.   Iced white coffee 'Pak Ko Pi Ping'. There was a stall selling dim sum such as 'siew mai', 'pau', 'loh mai kai', amongst others, and with an open kitchen concept, we could see the preparation of their popular egg tarts (egg filling poured into the molded pastry before entering the oven). Another recommendation here is the dry curry noodles (RM4). The curry tas

Restaurant Chicken House, Ampang, Selangor

Image
My friends recommended me this place and the last time we went, it was closed (or not opened yet). They talked highly about the chicken- how tasty it was, and i could not resist trying. When my sister suggested Korean, i mentioned about this place; the chicken being emphasized as usually, Korean cuisine serves beef and cabbage 'kim chi'. My family is not fond of the sourish taste, but a little different-than-usual sometimes can be exciting. A lot can be said about the Korean culture through its food (like others too).   Chicken House, as its name suggests, boasts on its chicken dishes- even from the stairways up to the shop, a big poster is displayed. From the outside, this eatery doesn't attract- simple and plain, but once i stepped into the shop, i felt the coziness of a Korean home (at least that's how i felt; i've yet to visit a real korean house). Air-conditioned, the seating is split into two: table and chair, or table and floor. We decided for the latte

Wall Paintings in Ipoh, Perak

Image
Because it was new, it was challenging to locate this place. There were not many websites promoting this upcoming attraction of street art and none with clear directions to get there; like a treasure hunt game with no map for us to follow but clues of rainbow coloured buildings and that it's located somewhere near Ipoh Oldtown. Googling it redirected me towards the cave or cave temple paintings instead. We stopped by many places to ask the locals for directions, asked them about the lion dance mural. But because it was new, they didn't know where it was too. We were literally driving in circles; the sun almost down and the sky grew dark. Until i noticed a row of shophouses painted in familiar colours. Quickly, we parked our car and headed towards the Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Indigo-Violet buildings; one clue found and we were in the lookout for the wall paintings. Rainbow colour combination is always a good colour combination. See the rainbow. The street art is at

Burps and Giggles Restaurant, Ipoh, Perak

Image
An interesting name for an eatery; my interpretation of the name is that of having a fulfilling (burps!) and happy (giggles) meal. I have heard many good reviews about this 7-month old, part of the Indulgence company, eat-out in Ipoh that is fast becoming popular amongst the locals, especially with photographs of 3-dimensional murals and its rustic interior. Greeting welcome. Little did i know that this restaurant is made up of at least three houses, of old architecture that exudes a unique charm (my friend asked if the owners felt anything strange before and they replied 'no', then saying that it's always crowded). The non-uniform furniture comprises of chairs, sofa and wooden benches with various table sizes, it's walls decorated with paintings and every corner is fitted with something unique, something antique. A good blend of concept, but i felt it was overdone, making the restaurant rather cluttered and, in an odd way, claustrophobic.   Against an old,

Yoke Heng Restaurant, Seri Kembangan, Selangor

Image
For Sunday brunch, my dad suggested a restaurant and when i heard it was in Seri Kembangan, my first reaction was, 'so far?' (i was hungry at that time too). I'm glad they ignored my comment and decided to go anyway. Travel for good food. It was actually my dad's first time at the restaurant too, so finding the restaurant was challenging. On the same row as East of Highway Restaurant, clearly seen from the main road, we found ourselves into the just-opened restaurant, literally (opens at 10.30am, we were there around 10.45am). We were seated quick, the crowd had yet come, and placed our orders. Service was quick and soon, our stomachs were filled. The main reason we were there was this: Claypot Loh Shu Fan. I didn't expect it to appear like Loh Mee or come soupy. Our waiter recommended us to add vinegar. It has a unique flavour, the soup, a blend of sweetness and saltiness, and slightly sourish because of the vinegar, with egg, meat and fried onions. The nood

Plan B, KL

Image
An interesting and  catchy name for an eatery. 'Let's go Plan B'. 'What's plan A?' I don't know; may be a back-up choice strategy- it was to me as the first place we wanted to go apparently was fully booked and we needed to make reservations for Saturdays? But after my visit, Plan B is no substitute restaurant. Under the same company as Ben's (i enjoy Ben's partly for their food and partly for their concept and design), Plan B's interior and menu felt similar- cushioned sofa, black and white cottage like walls with paintings, and a flipboard-style, handwriting font menu . I went to the outlet in Bangsar Village: good service and friendly staff. Unlike Ben's, my table did not have riddle or question cards, nor recipe, to entertain ourselves with while waiting for dinner. But service was quick despite the crowd. Pasta Spicy Crabmeat. Strong seafood/crab aroma- crab lovers will enjoy this. The crabmeat comes in little pieces, mixed and
