Restaurant Chicken House, Ampang, Selangor

My friends recommended me this place and the last time we went, it was closed (or not opened yet). They talked highly about the chicken- how tasty it was, and i could not resist trying. When my sister suggested Korean, i mentioned about this place; the chicken being emphasized as usually, Korean cuisine serves beef and cabbage 'kim chi'. My family is not fond of the sourish taste, but a little different-than-usual sometimes can be exciting. A lot can be said about the Korean culture through its food (like others too).

Chicken House, as its name suggests, boasts on its chicken dishes- even from the stairways up to the shop, a big poster is displayed. From the outside, this eatery doesn't attract- simple and plain, but once i stepped into the shop, i felt the coziness of a Korean home (at least that's how i felt; i've yet to visit a real korean house). Air-conditioned, the seating is split into two: table and chair, or table and floor. We decided for the latter; we removed our shoes and sat on the mat, then flipped through the menu. Being our first, the lady owner recommended us to try several dishes- and she said she makes the rice cakes herself. For appetizers, we had long beans, broccoli and cauliflower (tasted like Chinese) and sliced potatoes (simple yet tasty; we wouldn't mind refills on this). Then, there's the 'kim chi' to whet our Korean appetite.

Military Soup (RM20) was good. Served raw in a pot, the stock was poured and let to boil on our table. Off white turning red, once ready, the ramen noodles (RM6), in the background, were added into the pot. It was not as sour as we thought; the flavours satisfied our taste buds, leaving us only to complain for more ramen noodles or more soup. The spiciness level was just right for us.

Chicken (RM20) with udon (RM8) and rice cakes cooked on hot plate before us. Unlike the Military Soup, this tasted sweet and the gravy thick. The bite-size chicken was tender and as the owner recommended, the udon noodles goes well for this. My family favoured the Military Soup more but i felt this gave a good run for money.

This had to be the best of the night! My expectation of their chicken was high but when i sank my teeth onto this crispy, flavourful skin and meat, my expectation went flying off the roof. I was wondering how good can a chicken taste and this just proves it. Sweet, aromatic coating on its crust, tender and smooth meat on the inside. The above portion is half the actual size because the owner helped to divide this dish into two. Rather steep, RM 49, but worth a try, good to share, and if splurging is desired, splurge it right with this.

Korean cuisine is not my family's top pick for dinner; however, we generally enjoyed dining at Restaurant Chicken House, for the food, for the experience, and for the atmosphere.
