Burps and Giggles Restaurant, Ipoh, Perak
An interesting name for an eatery; my interpretation of the name is that of having a fulfilling (burps!) and happy (giggles) meal. I have heard many good reviews about this 7-month old, part of the Indulgence company, eat-out in Ipoh that is fast becoming popular amongst the locals, especially with photographs of 3-dimensional murals and its rustic interior.
Little did i know that this restaurant is made up of at least three houses, of old architecture that exudes a unique charm (my friend asked if the owners felt anything strange before and they replied 'no', then saying that it's always crowded). The non-uniform furniture comprises of chairs, sofa and wooden benches with various table sizes, it's walls decorated with paintings and every corner is fitted with something unique, something antique. A good blend of concept, but i felt it was overdone, making the restaurant rather cluttered and, in an odd way, claustrophobic.
We were there around 5pm and burgers were sold out. According to one of the owners, burgers are their best seller and are usually out by 3pm. We didn't want to eat heavy as it was for tea so desserts we chose. We sat at a corner near the stairs before moving out to the 'living room' of the house for larger space. Menu is written on boards over the counter, creative but not easy to read, and we placed our orders to the waiter attending to us. While waiting for the food, we explored the restaurant.
Food looked better than it actually tasted. My crepe was rather chewy, like a paratha or roti canai. My friend's crepe was dry but i found its taste better than mine, with strong, fragrant hazel nut aroma. Another friend had Bagel, though i didn't taste it, her expression wasn't all that convincing. They were slightly overpriced too, in our opinion, making it not worth it.
A highly potential place with good concept but misses the mark for a good tea or dessert stop. Since i have yet to try their claimed best sellers (the burgers), i may give this place a second try. It may change my outlook towards this restaurant but one thing will remain: no desserts if i return, unless they improve.

Against an old, wooden staircase.
